At work we have an electric vehicle and over the last I-don't-know-how-many-years the batteries have been continually topped up with deionised water and I was just wondering how long they could last like that.

It depends on the usage Kam, My brother had a Golf Buggy, the batteries had just been changed on that, they had been on for a number of years, providing the battery's are checked on a regular basis you should get quite a few years out of them, can you remember the electric milk floats? they were put on charge every night and never let the companys down.
The expected life of a lithium battery on an electric car is between 5 and 12 years dependant on many variables i.e ambient temperature, usage, charge rate etc.
