I am thinking of buying a 1999 T reg Corsa 1.2GL as a run around for my two student children, the car has done 87,000 miles, body looks in good condition as does under the car. Quick look at the engine and other than a little oil around the place looks good, sounds good. Service history is only up to 27000 miles. Normally I would get the cam belt changed but seller tells me it has a chain and not a belt is this true, is there anything else I should look for.

I have one of the very last Corsa "B"s (W reg late 2000). I did wonder when the water pump failed at 50000m why the garage didn`t fit a new timing belt as a matter of course. Because it doesn`t have one, it`s a (long) chain. I had a rattle from one tappet about 20000 which eventually at 55000 made it sound like a diesel! Five hydraulic tappets had siezed. I managed to remove the cams and fish them out with one of those flexible retrieval tools, flushed them thoroughly with paraffin & complete silence, bliss. You can find out which ones are siezed by pressing the rocker arms with a large screwdriver.
depends on whether it is the old 8 valve engine which is a belt driven engine

if its is the more modern ecotec engine then this is chain driven, as is the 1 litre 12 valve.
