I am in the process of buying myself a new/nearly new car for the first time. I usually buy a used car. I want a small cheap to run car. I have the nissan micra/ toyota/ citreons in mind. Can anyone tell me how i can find information on when car shapes change. I intend keeping it for a good many years and dont want to buy one thats just about to change to a new shape. Is there a dedicated website, I know that sometimes people have hobbies like - keeping track of these changes , thought there may be a good website - hope someone can help, - thanks

Hi,
I don't know any "dedicated websites", however, the likes of What Car, Autoexpress, Top Gear websites and associated magazines give details of when various models are facelifted or changed radically. Plus, the likes of Parkers car guide magazine also gives relevant details etc etc.

For example, the latest Honda Civic is unrecognizeable to its predecessor, the current Nissan Micra and the new Ford Ka, to name but a few, are also visually different to what they once were.

Present car shapes usually last at least 4/5 years before anything radical happens to its shape/appearance. Therefore, beware a model which you've seen around for that length of time - it's due for a change!

Thanks for that info, I'll have a look at them. I like the current Nissan micra shape, looks a bit like a VW beetle. but ive a feeling that will probably change soon and they can look a bit dated. I have just found out that there is a new shape Ford Ka this year. I also really like the look of the Toyota Aygo and I have just had a look at one of those sites and they have got a great review , so thanks for that. any other tips very welcome. - J
Whatever you decide to go for, remember 'cash is king'... go buying with a hard attitude and you'll get a fantastic deal at the moment...

Had a look at what cars superminis, does anyone know if I should be haggling the new car prices? even the new car prices seem to have target prices.?

Er... yes... if you don't ask you won't get.

Remember, the car industry is almost rock bottom at the moment.

Go with a 'realistic' offer and they'll snap your hand off.

snags - know that might have sounded daft but - the dealership websites ( toyota ) are already offering offers ( once in a blue moon ! ) with supposedly a few hundred off and interest free. So would you still try and knock them down from them prices ?
Definitely... don't be intimidated... these are desperate times! - for car manufacturers and dealers as well as punters.

If you have the funds available to buy outright without the need for a loan/finance etc you are in a very strong buying position.

If one dealer says no there will be plenty of others that'll say yes...
I'd go for an ex demo and beat them down... and keep beating! I'd also have no problem 'demanding' free breakdown recovery, floor mats, a tank of petrol and even a CD player upgrade... and free first service if not already included!

when i went into a car supermarket the other day, the salesman came straight over and first thing he said was - How much have you got to spend? I didnt think this was a good thing to start with, but someone said today that this is a good idea - because they will probably come down to what you will pay - even though screen price is more. You sound quite knowledgable - what would you think??

Sounds to me like you are 'too nice' lol... take someone with you who will drive a hard bargain and not back down.

One of the most powerful tool you have is your feet.

If you aren't getting exactly what you want... walk away.

If the salesman even starts to call you back... you'll get what you want lol.

He's worrying about his monthly targets and commission...

snags - thanks so much for all that info - makes me feel a bit more confident, the ideas for extras are great , will keep them in mind. Probably not "too nice" - just "too stupid " LOL... thanks J
Don't forget that when a salesman is talking , he's lying. So do the same to him. Never tell how much you have, he'll just try and up it to the next model, any sticker price is wishful thinking on thier part. Just laugh and say I 'm not paying Sunday prices for that, you'll have to sharpen your pencils a good bit yet before you get a deal. Blogs has offered me one of those a �1,000 less than yours, what can you do?

Thanks oldhenry, I will try that one, but Ive got to admit I HATE haggling. Hate it on holiday etc, usually like to just see a price and if I think its acceptable - pay it. but with cars its different. I suppose I'll just have to learn to be ruthless. I have had so much advice about not paying the asking price in this financial climate. Am off to look this weekend.
Have looked at "what cars" target price, although helpful -even they give a range of prices.
Has anyone got any examples of how much they have knocked down a dealer. Would be interesting to know. -J
