I changed the heating Matrix on the Ka in autumn, it was working fine. Now though, some times it blows hot other times it doesn't. I'll check the coolant level but is there anything elso to check other than replacing the matrix, surely it can't have gone in 4 months? it was a Ford original part, not a cheap copy

Check if your vents are working properly. The heater matrix is always full of hot water when the car is running. When you turn the dashboard control to 'cold' or 'hot' you are turning a series of levers in the dashboard which lower or raise a plastic flap over a vent tube, allowing hot air or cold air through the vent .....or not. If one of these levers becomes stuck, whether broken or just jammed up with years of dust, you may turn your control to warm and cold air still comes out.

I'll warn you it can be a real bitch to fix and usually involves taking the dashboard off. Not for the fainthearted or DIY bodger.
or it could be airlocked after you chnaged the heater matrix.
