vauxhall astra 1.4 16v engine problems

my astra keeps cutting out when i slow down or brake, also all the lights are coming on, on the dsshboard, the engine is making a whooshing noise when the car cuts out, the noise is coming from somewhere near the power steering, but the steering seems fine, please help

Possibly the idle control valve stepper motor needs cleaning or replacing.

Don't be surprised if your garage says yours hasn't got one.

I know old 8 valve 1400s have, but other recent Astrasdon't have such a thing.

P S I am not an expert, just a hassled Astra owner.
Agree about the stepping motor. Expensive little black boxes they can be. You can bypass the need to replace a stepping motor by having the automatic choke converted to manual.
