I have just bought a car with no road tax, with it being the end of the month, If i bought 12 months tax right now, it run out on the 31st of december, thereby losing a month.

A friend told me that the DVLA will give a couple of days 'lee-way' for people in my situation, and in fact the tax wouldnt run out until jan 31st '08.

Can anybody confirm if this is right or wrong?

I can wait until thursday to get on the road, its just this is my first car and the wait is killing me!

Im not sure as to wether they dvla will let you off with a couple of days, however if you really want to get on the road, yes you might waste nearly a months tax but at the end of the day it only works out at around 10 (for a 1.4 or less) or about 16 for over 1.4 - so it just depends how eager you are really. I would just go out and get it.
Just go for it - sod ther consequences
It's up to you but if you want to drive now, get it, depends how much it is.

It is illegal to have a car on the road (even parked outside your house) without vaild tax. This even applies if a car you have just bought and are simply driving home. Cal me simpl but i think there are too many illegal drivers on the road. Chances are there will also be no mot or insurance. Come to think of it. it also invaildates your insurance.
ps. Some roads have automatic number plate reading, which can tell if a vehcle is taxed, mot'd and insured, .so you only have yourself to blame if you get caught.
if you bought your tax today you will lose a month, just leave the car on the drive for a couple of days and tax it on thursday

thanks for your answers guys, its a 1.9 turbo diesel, so the tax is quite alot higher. I am just going to wait until thursday to tax it, Ive been waiting to get my hands on it for a fortnight, I guess a couple more days won't hurt!
