it only ever became necessary because of the limited character spaces in text messages - that isn't an issue anywhere else - there is lots of space here.

Its all a bit worrying ! I agree with Backdrifter on this one! Using Text abbreviations makes the writer sound backward and quite retarded i think.
I understand that the Government is considering letting school children complete exams using this backward form of communication?!! Hard to believe but apparantly true, god help us all and what will happen to the English Language?

Well, the English language is evolving and has been ever since it came into existence. Shakespeare invented hundreds of words and phrases that we accept as commonplace now, and I bet there were people at the time who reacted to his doing that in the way some of us react to the use of textspeak!

However... I do believe that while we should accept the use of new terms and new meanings of established words, the use of textspeak is something else. It represents a truncated way of speaking that makes sense when texting, but in an exam - and to an extent, in a forum like this - you're supposed to be communicating ideas and understanding, and I don't think textspeak allows this. I can't believe its use in exams is actually being considered, though, I suspect that's probably a blown-up non-story.

incidentally, I was recently turned down for a job on a film because i didn't have a car.
there was no money to hire another person to drive so i was told if i could find a driver i would be hired.
the film starred nigel harman and i actually considered coming on here and asking YOU if you had a car and would be my driver for a few weeks... as you obviously like him and would probably like to meet him.
