Hi all, hope you can help. I have just been quoted 130 for a service and MOT for my 1.8 Orion diesel. Also, I was told that as they have to do an emissions test which can stress the cam belt, I should have this done too. I know I need to change the cam belt as I don't know when it was last done, but it seems to me that to mention it when asking for a quote is preparing me for a large bill! Not to mention that I think 130 is a lot for a service and MOT - what do other people think - is this reasonable? Thanks

it's about right. depends on whats included as regards parts oil, oil filter etc. the cam belt bit is to cover themselves, it is part of the test to run a diesel up to full revs for a maximum of ten times to obtain an average emissions figure. if the cam belt snaps its up to you to pay because you were warned. harsh? put yourself in the garage owners position...

130 for a service and MOT I would be happy to pay that I understand an MOT is approx 40 now so 90 for a service seems reasonable. I can see understand the garage warning you re the cam belt, why not have the cam belt changed first then go for the service and MOT renewal, if you have enough time left.

Did the garage inspect the cambelt?  If there is any oil/coolant contamination or other visual damage to the belt then they have the right to refuse to do the MOT in case the belt snaps.

v64paul, I never heard from you about Oktoberfest, it started yesterday (finishes 2 weeks tomorrow) and it's totally crazy; amazing!

No the garage hasn't seen the car yet which is why it sounded a little odd that they were saying about the cam belt! But if you guys reckon that price is ok!!! Also, last time the car had it's MOT it cost quite a lot of money so I am expecting it to fail this time too. Can I ask that they leave the emissions test till last so I can see approximately how much the MOT is going to cost before forking out for the cam belt?

I hope my next one only costs 130 including the MOT.

You are right to ask though.  A lady friend was quoted 1000 to cure a particular problem.  I took her to my usual garage who were able to do it for 8.

i paid 44 quid for an MOT at AA service centre and i think for a basic service with mot was about 104 quid but thats  the basic one
