Odd sound coming from engine compartment but no warning lights on dash. Took car to dealer who diagnosed a worn bearing/pulley for alternator which also required replacement belt. Parts and labour £300. Phone call this afternoon saying job done but safety inspection revealed rear tyres to be on limit of legality......£150 each. They threw in replacement wipers f.o.c. Started off quite a nice day today. Bloody cars.

Question Author
Mercedes.
so when was your last MOT? how much mileage have you done since it to have tires almosgt illegal-by the way, they may have lasted a while yet
I was told to be on tyrewatch when I got an MOT last year. When I went back this year they didn't even mention it, though I didn't get new ones. I only do about 3000 miles a year but I didn't know that would actually restore your tracks.
Buy a thread-depth gauge, you may have had quite a lot more wear left in those tyres. Were they balding or threading? A gauge is relatively cheap in comparison to a garage trying their luck. Of course, your tyres may have been bordering illegal, but they often see people coming!
Mc, did you get it done at your local Merc dealer? if not someone has ripped you off, I would go back & Question that, I will come back with a price. Depending on your tyres/Summer / Winter, that price is way above & I'm not talking about Cheap>Cheap tyres. If you put your sizes on here someone will set you in the right area for new less cost reputable tyres.
Depending on your Model / year, anywhere from £70>>>> £110. at the most 1.1/2 to fit & that's tops, you have said parts & Labour? did they re-con the unit? the belt for that car at the most £15.
