We noticed yesterday that the Croke Park stadium in Ireland has a stand called the Michael Hogan stand, in memory of a footballer who was killed there. It transpired that Michael was from Clonmel, Co Tipperary. This is also where my Grandmother was from and her maiden name was also Hogan. I would like to find out if there is any connection between them but don't have a clue where to start.

I know from trying to find out about her Dad, who was apparently a successful jockey that my family holds very little information so asking them will be fruitless. Can anyone help?

Seems to be a very popular surname, but you could start here:

Good luck!

Thanks for that. Bit lost already.

I was hoping Hogan might not be such a common name. Could have my work cut out here.
You could also try:

but, as you say, it could be a big job!
Michael Hogan's father was Michael Hogan born ballyneale Tipperary 1860 and his mother was Johanna 'Josephine' Kennedy, of his 8 siblings the 3 sisters closest in age to him, (he was the youngest child) werw Molly, died 1918, Katherine 1882-1974 and Josephine Francis 1895-1956 Katherine married a Daniel Harney and Josephine married a Martin Brennan. His 3 older sisters all married, one an O'shea, ine someone called Buggy and the other a Brady
was her father James Hogan who rode in the 1920s as there is a small amount about him online

Wow, Dotty I think you may be on to something here. The only thing I knew about my great grandad (the jockey) was that his first initial was J. Perhaps this could be the James you mention. Could you provide me with a link to the info you say is on the net about him please? I'd be very very grateful.
As a matter of interest, there's this, too.

New2 - I just want to say thanks again for the link you gave. I bought the card and it's great. There is a little info on the back of it that really praises my G Grandad as a jockey and predicts him to win the Grand National! I cant' wait to show my Aunties and Uncles when we have a big family get together in two weeks. Thanks so much.
Wow I'm so excited! I've been told that my Great Grandad's name is also James Hogan the Jockey! I was just researching him on-line and came across this. His daughter is also my grandmother Elizabeth Joan Hogan who is now living in New Zealand. My mother was a child she had during the war and had her adopted before her marriage in New Zealand (she didnt tell a soul) We finally found my grandmother in 2003 and she invited my parents to visit her in New Zealand. Joan has kept in touch with my mother via phone and letter ever since, unfortunately she didnt want to tell the family about my mum. Joan told my mum all about her Grandad and I've just started to research him. It's fantastic to also find a cousin while I'm at it!!! Let me know if you've dug up any more info or would also like to know about the our branch of your family tree.
Hi milly143, if you do want to get in touch with me I'll have to think of a safe way of getting my info to you. :)
