I think that you have to show proof that the name that you are declaring under is yours...even if its a recent passport, there should be an audit trail back to your original name, unless of course the name proving document itself is a fake or obtained by fraud
I changed my name by Deed Poll (not cos I'm a criminal I hasten to add!) and all ID except your birth cert will show your new name.  Unless someone asks to see the Deed Poll or birth cert there's a good chance they would never realise it had ever been changed.  Many people I know now don't know unless I tell them.  However, I always state it on job applications etc so they can chase up references from companies I worked for under my previous name.

Feeb - not every employer makes a search or can make a search. Those that do, sort of have a reason to, like they deal with kids

So......if you get the job in the name of John Smith and then they find out that as Lizzie Borden or whateva, you gave your father forty whacks, then you will be out of a job. Also they may have grounds for claiming all your wages back. Heavy stuff - tell the truth !
