When filing, do the "Mc"s come first? Or do they come in order after the "Ma"s? For instance, who should come first, "McMahon" or "Maribel"? Historically, did this change over the years to one way or the other?

If it helps, Waterstones file in the order Mc then Ma, Mac being interchangeable for Mc. So McDonald - Macintosh - McMahon - Maribel - etc
According to the BT Phonebook, M', Mc and Mac are all treated as Mac, and it is the next letter which determines where the name is listed.
I was taught that "Mc"s and "Mac"s should be treated as the same. Thus "A Mackintosh" would be filed with "A McKintosh" All "Mc"s and "Mac"s should be filed between "Mab.." and "Mad...".
