always used limewie but av never paid a fee, and never had any problems
I've been using the free version of Limewire for years and rarely have a problem. As long as you have a bit of savvy (ie don't download music files that don't have a music extension like .mp3 or .wav) it's perfectly safe to use. I did download one .jpg once and was unable to move or delete it -- I still don't know why.
When you download things from Limewire you are downloading files from other peoples computers (ordinairy members of the public like you and I).

You have no idea if these files are what they say they are, so a file could be a music file, but it may just as easily be a file with a virus in it.

As kaaliz says, music files tend to end in the extension mp3 or wma (mysong.mp3 or hitsong.wma for example).

As long as you make sure all the files you download have this extension you should be ok.

DONT download programs (files with the extension exe, scr, dll and so on). If you download these they could be a virus.

As long as you are careful you should be ok, but that is not to say you wont get a virus.
Be aware that some nasty people try to hide a virus inside a file by giving it a strange name.

So they may call the file

mysong.mp3.greatsong.......exe

Although it has the text mp3 in the title the last three letters are exe which denotes its a program. Be careful of any files with long strange file names.

And make sure you have anti-virus software installed. Maybe run the anti virus program against all the files you have downloaded before you play them.
Limewire is usually ok, but there can be instances of spyware when downloading from there. Vehelpfulguy's advice is sound.

Also be aware that while limewire is fine for downloads of single songs one at a time, a far better and safer way of downloading music (by albums rather than single songs) is to use torrents.

I will not explain how to use torrents here but if you search answerbank for "torrents" or "azereus" you will find more explanation.
I have used Limewire 'free' for years and had no problems.

I now have the 'paid for' version - just because i am updating my extensive singles colection to digital, and some of the stuff is too rare to find on the 'free', but the 'paid for' has turned them up.

Having said that, I have ever downloaded any albums, only ever old singles, so I guess the chances of virus geeks bothering with the songs I want are slim.

Just be aware of any file that has a '117' measurement - it's always a really irritating lousy Bull Clinton ad. for a gadget store - save yourself the probelm and avoid them - because almost anything you put in will offer one to you as part of the listed choices.

As a final point, you should as a matter of course have good anti-spyware fitted, and run it regularly - just because if you surf the net at all, you are open to viruses, which can be serious. I got my hard drive frield by a Trojan two years ago, had to have it wiped and re-installed - that was not from LW either!

Be careful out there ...
