Ipod Nano...HELP

Can someone pretty please help me before I start to cry?
I have an Ipod Nano I guess a few months over a year old and for some reason it's gone belly up. Songs that I have downloaded and copied off my cd's have mysteriously disappeared from my Ipod library and my library has copied itself to my Ipod...Songs that I deleted have now appeared on my Ipod. HELP. This isn't normal is it?! Has this happened to anyone else?
I'm not even sure that tis question is in the right group but could someone please point me in the right direction?
Another point is when my Nano is charging id used to say 'do not disconnect' now it just shows the menu: music

extras etc
