My frist thought was Columbo as his wife was referred to but not seen in the series.
There was a series called Mrs Columbo ( and later Kate Loves A Mystery) strring Kate Mulgrew,which returned the favour.

Never watched Rumpole but Arthur Daly in Minder frequently referred to 'her indoors' but she was never seen on screen so that has to be one of them

i have messed the question up soz people,The first programme am thinking of was made in 1970 onwards and the second one in the 1980's

Dad's Army started in 1968, and the last episode was transmitted on 13th November 1977.

The premise of your teaser (ie, 2 80's tv programmes) is therefore a little misleading.

i think it's minder, & me &my girl, the wife who was never seen was muriel yates wife of derek yates (played by tim brooke taylor) it also starred joan sanderson, richard O'sullivan, joanne ridley, leni harper,sandra clarke, joanne campbell
