Haha woofgang it's one of those strange combinations that actually works, I had this in either veitnam or thailand and it was to die for. Boxtops yes unfortunately I can't find anything on it so maybe it was another chef that mentioned it or maybe the recipe comes under a different name?
You sure it's not honey & star-anise?
I lived in the Far East and China and I must say, despite eating many foods of many cultures, I never came across liquorice - rice licquor yes (such as Mao Tai and Wuxi).

I agree with Naz, star anise perhaps and that is used extensively in prawn cooking

found one but you will note that the liquorice is really anise based.

You will also find reference in French Med fish cooking but that really refers to fennel.

That could possibly be it as I definitely tasted that aniseed flavour.
