The origins of UK gypsies?

Where do the UK based travelling people originate from? Are they anyway connected to the European Romany gypsies?

All the ones I have come into contact with are of Irish descent...

I don't think they have any true Gypsy origins.  They're just avoiding paying tax and avoiding all the trouble they cause.

Romany gypsies were in Britain, there are references to them in literature of the  1800's. (They weren't terribly popular then, either.)

They may have moved on (through Wales and stopping off to produce my great-grandfather) to Ireland, I would have thought it unlikely that the Irish gypsies are completely unconnected.

Oh, and counted in the census back then too. There was a specific category for "itinerants"
