Please ignore some of the other posts on the thread though.
Barrowman is bidialectal. He learned an American accent after school children picked on his Scottish accent when he moved to the U.S. His accent is often called Mid-Atlantic

He stated while he was appearing on The Friday Night Project that he still speaks in a Scottish accent when he is with his parents.
What?? You mean the programme discovered that gay people can't help being gay? That it's as natural to them as heterosexuality is to the majority? It's not an illness than can be cured by a bit of a slap and a bloody good talking to? They don't do it just to annoy their parents, upset the establishment, or enrage the so-called "Christian" right? Gosh. Who'd have thunk it?

Next week - why do some people choose to be black? Are they deliberately trying to wind up the BNP, or do they just want to be good dancers?
Thank goodness there is a programme about why people are gay. I have alwas thought it was a gene thing of some sort and not something people "decide" to be.I have a constant argument with my family about it as they will not have it you are born like it. Just hope there is more about it now and some proof is found to actually pinpoint the reason. And yes when John was speaking to his parents he was talking in a Scottish accent.
A pity each of his parents weren't gay.
People can't help their sexuality - it's the way they are and not a lifestyle choice.

This has been common knowledge for decades, and this is why paedophiles can't be treated,
I disagree there Ethel,

Paedophiles can be treated...with a lethal injection
littleoldme - laughed lots at your answer. Approx. one in ten people are gay, how can it not be considered normal?
The religious fanatics of the world would kill or put a tenth of the population in prison. It's so ridiculous!
Sir Alec: I honestly find it absolutely staggering in these supposedly enlightened times that so many people - many of them perfectly intelligent in other aspects - can't or won't accept that our sexuality is part of who we are, not a conscious decision that we make. This is of course just as true for heterosexuals: had the dice of fate rolled differently, we could all have ended up as gay as John Barrowman.

Glad I gave you a chuckle though. :-)
Yes, John Barrowman is an almighty Queen isn't he? I can't help laughing at him. Everyone who meets Graham Norton says he is the most lovely person. I've had many gay friends throughout my life, some I don't like, just as there are straight people I don't like. Many men can't understand why women prefer gay friends, well, they don't talk to your t*ts all night and try to get you into bed when they're drunk, then sulk and get nasty when you say no!
One in ten people are gay? That means one person in the footbal taem I play for is gay?

I bet its the one who has always got a hard-on in the bath.
I watched this programme too and I don't understand how people can argue being gay is a choice. I'm hetero and I know it's not something I chose, its just me.

To me, to say it is a choice then we must all be bi-sexual. I don't know any heterosexual who would just 'chose' to be gay. or vice versa. does that make sense to anyone else?
Question Author
ive always said that its a "part of your make up" i used to argue witha colleague at work as she always used to say that it was something that was pushed onto you, and if people see gays that they then want to try it and then themselves turn gay if they think they will like it!! how sad is that thinking
gina32 I quite agree with you there are a lot of people, most in my family, who think being gay is a "fad" they are going through.! Why on earth would someone "chose" to be gay when there are so many nasty people out there that do not like them. mY husband says there was no gays when he was growing up, rubbish!!!!!!!!!!!! of course there was and has alwas been but have not been able to admit it. I loved the film Brokeback Mountain that showed you ,even cowboys, must have had the same problems. But cannot be themselves because of people's reaction.
i loved Brokeback Mountain too.

Homosexuality has been around for as long as humans have. If its mentioned in the bible as a sin surely this shows it has been about since way before then and is a natural part of society.

what harm does one persons sexuality do to others?Biggots need to get over themselves.
lilacben - remind your husband of Frankie Howerd, Kenneth Williams, Oscar Wilde, William Haines, Wifred Brambell (old Steptoe) and many of the old Hollywood actors.
I don't think many people seriously argue that it is a choice.

But there is an arguement as to whether there are elements in upbringing or experiences.

Remember the twins in the program. If one turns out to be gay (which looked likely) and the other does not you have an interesting case.

Both share the same DNA and the same upbringing. However they won't have had the same life experiences.
Both shared a very similar environment in the womb.

Of course you can have a gene that is not expressed in the same way that you can have a genetic disposition to cancer and not get it.

Remember too that there may be a number of factors that determine someone's sexuality. Why one person is gay does not have to be the same reason that everyone who is gay got there.

I think the one thing the program actually managed to show is that it's pretty complicated and easy answers are probably wrong
Is it one hundred per cent in their nature. And nothing to do with nuture, environment, circumstances, influences and upbringing? I did'nt watch the programme.
jake-the-peg, your answer wasn't there when I posted mine.
