What are the consequences for surviving relatives when a person dies owing money?

Would be interested in personal experiences. It's for an article I am writing in a UK broadsheet. Please email me at [email protected] if you think you can help.

Legally, there shouldn't be any consequences. If the debts were in the deceased's sole name then any that cannot be paid out of the assets of the estate are written off.
