Viewing figures are calculated using a (relatively small) number of volunteer households who have an apparatus which records every click of their remote. The programmes fractional share of viewers is then applied to the national population, and hey presto, you have national viewing figures. Channel bosses do not actually know how many people watched a particular programme, but it is nevertheless a useful guide.
Hi Info, It is done by people keeping logs of everything they watch during the week. They are volunteers and the organisation is BARB. I am sad to say I used to do it. See:_
