am i correct in assuming editors and directors for news programmes are very different from their film/cinema namesakes? , what does a director direct on a news programme? - he cant tell the newsreaders how to act to get the right delivery can he? "come on sir trevor this time with more emotion darling"

No, but someone needs to decide what filler material to put in, what graphics to allow on and what not to, what goes into the teleprompter... etc.
he also runs the program, switching to vt at the right time, choosing which camera to use etc.
