A couple of weeks ago, I heard that a murder scene in Coronation Street, had a record breaking 73,000,000 viewers. How do they know how many viewers a programme has had?

I think a selected group of people are monitored for their television viewing habits and the results are extrapolated.
There's an Answerbank article on how they come up with the figures here:
http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Article.go?id=3351
but I'd be very surprised if 73,000,000 viewers watched Corrie... the population of the UK is only (this is a scientific estimate) 59,676,698!
...you have to bear in mind that certain programmes are broadcast abroad and these viewing figures are taken into account also
i still doubt it will be 73,000,000 people
It was 17,000,000 people.
