When did it become fashionable for young women to have tattoos in the middle of the lower back?

And why?

It's been a while now. I got mine done when I was 18 (5 years ago) and that was pretty much when it was a must have although I think it's died down now. I don't know why other people got them on the back but mine was so I could show or hide it. I also think it looks quite sexy - rather than stuck on the arm!!! I love mine.

What about older women ? I got mine in my lower back in 2001 at the age of 43. Its a daisy to always remind me of my wonderful yellow labrador Daisy even when she;s no longer with me in years to come. ALthough I'm a middle aged woman my parents dont know about my tattoo and I'd probably get an absolute b*****king if they found out !!

Just a word of caution to all ladies thinking about getting this done. The chances are that you won't be able to have an epidural when you have a baby if the tattoo covers the part of the back where the needle needs to be inserted. Thought I'd let you know as it surprised me and the wife when we found out last week!

Thanks for that Mats!! Although I must say the thought of an epidural makes me shudder!!! I don't do that sort of thing very well! Although I'll probably be screaming for one whenever the time comes in the future!! But thank you for that bit of info.

I got my first tattoo done in my lower back 10 years ago. I wanted it somewhere that wouldn't stretch out of shape if I put on weight.

One of my friends gained a lot of weight when pregnant and her tattoo on her upper thigh never looked the same again.

I've often wondered this myself BigMac. I believe it is because it was seen as trendy and a recent phase that many woment went through in the last decade. But I find it very ****** and wouldn't want a girlfriend who had one....I prefer independent thinking women, not ones that follow trends. Besides, they cant even see them back there without a mirror so it also suggests they have low self esteem and do it to satisfy others ie men who think that sort of thing is cool

Sam how did you get away with having a tatt at 16? My tattooist won't do them on under 18's :o)
