Why are Shane Lynch's tattoos SO terrible?

Watching The Games last night, and seeing Shane reminded me of thinking the same question last time he was on. They really are awful. A gallows, a chain round his neck, shackles, a number 13... and they're not even that well done. Does anyone know if there's some background story as to why he's went for these tattoos? With all his success (and presumably, wealth), could he not have afforded a better artist?

Who cares about the tattoos!! I'm too busy looking at the body to worry about the tattoos! Shane is absolutely gorgeous, shame he's lost the ponytail tho!
