We have an imaginary person who had dropped something or is about to walk out in front of an imaginary car and we’re debating what gender they would like to be addressed by?

I admit that my brain is not working very well just now but I have no idea what you are all debating.
I also admit to being terribly confused about much that is happening with regard to our species.

I've just been reading about Lorraine Kelly constantly referring to Sam Smith as him, he throughout a piece to camera and the criticism she received.
I would find it difficult to use they and them when referring to one person. I find it hard enough when reading an article about one person and those pronouns are used. All my life those words have meant two or more people and it reminded me of the old joke about a schizophrenic.

rowan, I am simply playing about with words and old jokes. Schizophrenics were (wrongly) thought by some people to have split personalities - there was more than one person occupying their brain so the old joke was that could would be talking to 'them'.
