They’re not on our tellies, all channels are the same.

Not in my experience V - BBC are often so bad as to be laughable, whereas others pretty much bang on. I wonder who supplies the service & if it differs from channel to channel.
Do mean subtitles on live programmes or those on recorded ones?
Question Author
live
Question Author
snooker particularly highlights the difference
The live ones are as slow as a week in the jail.

they are on the BEEB!
I had to laugh at Antique Roadshow last night. The expert said Foy, twice, the subtitles were 'Foy' yet it is spelt Fowey.
On the whole the BBC are no better nor worse than any other channel for subtitling but I don't watch snooker.

My other half has severe hearing difficulties so we keep subtitles on permanently. They do provide some amusing faux pas.
Yes, ours are on permanently, too.
For me, sky subtitles are the worse.
Live subtitles use software that recognises a word and puts the corresponding graphic up.

The problem is the software is not sufficiently savvy to recognise accents, slang words, or words which sound similar, but have different context, hence the bloopers we have to live with until it is refined, and those bugs are eliminated.
Question Author
doesn't explain that IMV some channels do better than others
Guess they use different software
If you change the subtitle language to something like Finnish or Russian then, provided you don't speak the selected language, the lag won't be annoying.

I just think the beeb can't be arsed to provide a decent service.
Perseverer ///They do provide some amusing faux pas.///
Someone should make a programme on them.
What do you think Percy Vera?
Question Author
It's not just snooker - the beeb news subtitles are beyond abysmal.
I find the subtitles fine too except for on the news when they are always out of sync. Has the sound quality deteriorated or is it my age? Everybody seems to mumble these days.
YouTube is pretty bad sometimes.
Was looking at a video of Elton John arriving at the Crown Court yesterday with his husband David Furniture!
