First and formermost, I am just asking a question for my own understanding, so here it goes...Why are states wanting to ban abortions (after 15 weeks)?

Obviously you are in the USA so you would be better posting on a US website.
Some folk know they're right, even when they're not.
In summary here are the 3 main positions:
a) You should not kill and unborn because it's inconvenient.
b) You should not kill an unborn child for religious reasons (mainly catholic).
c) It is a woman's right to choose regarding her own body.
Now the states that want to ban abortion will have a strong belief in a) and/or b)
PS in the above I offer no opinion of my own.
Unfortunately, a lot of people want to use to law to make decisions for women, when that decision should be hers and hers alone to make.

People in power will use their own personal and religious beliefs to enforce their personal views on strangers.

That is basically why they want to do it - the timescale can be used as justification, although personally I believe it is a woman's right to choose, and not others to arbitrarily choose for her.
Well said Andy-Hughes. Very clearly expressed and I agree with every word.
Thank you Ringlet.
While working in the US it was almost always men who were more anti abortion. However when I took one such male into a room and offered him a "rubella baby" who needed fostering he refused. The child was blind, deaf, had heart problems, couldn't feed properly. The mother was not allowed to terminate the pregnancy by her partner who also refused to have anything to do with him.

That's because men like power - and power over women especially.
Anti abortionists consider a foetus a human being despite it not being able to exist outside of the mothers body. Why they insist that a rape victim should carry a baby to term is beyond me. Also why should a child who is severely disabled or who will die shortly after birth be born. To me it is kinder for both child and parents for that pregnancy to be terminated legally and as painlessly as possible

I don't know the answer to your question and reading the posts I get the impression that neither do the posters.

At 20 weeks the foetus is thought to be viable and hence after that time abortion seems unacceptable.

However, there is some research that suggests that a foetus can appreciate pain at 15 weeks......not wholly accepted by the medical profession.
I can only assume that certain states are using that as a humanitarian respect to the foetus.

I think the moral dilemma of terminating a pregnancy is one of the most difficult we can experience as human beings.

We can all carry our moral beliefs about the rights and wrongs of termination, and the time scales involved.

But I have always believed that the choice can only ever belong to the woman involved.

It is she who has to deal with the consequences, whichever decision she makes, and for anyone else to take that choice away from her, however good their reasons may appear to be, is morally bankrupt.
