Should the contestants be allowed to give only surnames as answers to questions?
I can accept the usual very famous ones- Beethoven, Shakespeare,Schubert etc etc....but when asked who starred in the movie "The Reader" the answer Winslett was given as correct.
This happened a couple of other times during the questions.
If the question was "who wrote the novel Wuthering Heights?" would the answer Bronte be equally acceptable?
Surely, only the full name should be accepted?

Contestants are told that a surname is acceptable provided there is no ambiguity.
Frankie Fanko is a regular on TV and Radio quiz programmes. She has appeared on Are you an Egghead on a winning team in Only Connect and was a Brain of Britain finalist in 2019.Although if that young man repeats his performance of last night the other 5 finalists will struggle.
i want the historian to win. I presume that they pick their best "specialist" subject at the begining - it must be a pain if you get to the final and you're on your 5th best subject!
I find it annoying, but them's the rules.

Very handy if you can remember the surname and not the first name, not so handy if you can remember the first name and not the surname ...

Who starred in the movie "The Reader"? Kate ... Kate ... Kate Will that do?

Bednobs, I can't speak for others but I chose my specialist subjects based on what I already knew about them and the enjoyment I knew I would get from researching them more thoroughly. If I had to choose a 'favourite' it would be my semi-final subject (Ludwig II of Bavaria)
