I watch this to be polite, because Mrs Hughes really likes it, but I really can't do with it.

To me, it's far too pleased with itself, contestants, impossible format, even the music!

I do like Victoria Coren-Mitchelll - but I have to click off before her final breathtakingly bad 'amusing' link at the end.

Anyone else feel like that, or are you fans?

Dont watch it then...
Its not difficult, watch something else/ do something else.

Why on Earth do (so called) men cave in to what their wives want?

I love Only Connect. I do manage to get a couple right on the wall sometimes. I'm better at the missing vowels round. I also get very excited, when I get an answer right, like zebo. :-)
It’s my favourite programme. I have got some of the connections in the past but nothing recently. I suppose we all like different programmes; there’s very little on mainstream tv that I like these days. I hate the quiz shows which have flashing lights and music - straightforward quizzes like this and U/C do me fine.

Steady on!!

It has nothing at all to do with 'caving in' as you so strangely put it.

I like to watch TV with my wife, nine times out of ten we watch something we both like, very occasionally I join her to watch Only Connect - I don't sit there swearing under my breath and wishing I had the power to defy her!!!

If find the programme somewhat pleased with itself, but it's not like having pins stuck in my eyes.
Me too, Helly. You could once do the wall on line. I loved that and made my children and nephews do it with me.
Just found you can do something similar. Must investigate and challenge Dave.
I think the same about the Art, it's above my knowledge a lot of the time.

I assumed I was just ignorant, rather than that the show needed to change to tailor my interests.

To reiterate - I have no problem with a question I don't know - I will learn something.

My issue is with questions - and answers - that I literally can't understand, that is useless to be as either knowledge or entertainment, so it defeats the point of the show for me.
I rest my case
Well why not use these questions as an opportunity to prompt you to read into something you didn't previously understand?
//It has nothing at all to do with 'caving in' as you so strangely put it//
Strangely? Why strangely?
I never mentioned Strangely, thats your interpretation.
I merely suggested that you view/do something else if you dont like
'Only Connect'.
I havnt wanted to watch certain things with my (previous) partners so I didnt!
Occasionally had to suffer a female strop about it, but no big deal.
But no way would I sit through something that I didnt want to.
Nailit, you seem to have an 'attitude' about women.
The questions are interesting and intriguing. That there are people who can answer them, sometimes so quickly, is wonderful.

It may defeat the point of the show for you, Andy but for many of us admiring the knowledge of others and sometimes being able to answer is just so good!

//Nailit, you seem to have an 'attitude' about women//
Do I?
And dont women have 'attitudes' about men?
Men and women think differently. Like it or lump it but we do.

Jim - // Well why not use these questions as an opportunity to prompt you to read into something you didn't previously understand? //

I might - but in the case of the science questions on UC, which is what we are discussing - I am unable to read into something when I don't know what it is because the question was Venusian as far as my understanding of it went!!
Well, we all have to start somewhere. I appreciate that in some ways Science is more specialised than Arts etc, but that shouldn't be too discouraging.
Those people on the 'old boys' UC are deliberately not answering questions, aren't they?

nailit - // //It has nothing at all to do with 'caving in' as you so strangely put it//
Strangely? Why strangely? //

Because 'caving in' clearly infers that I am being forced to watch under protest because I lack the moral fibre to protest and go and do something else, which, as I have pointed out, is absolutely not the case.

Nailit - you have known me long enough and well enough on here to know that if I don't wish to do anything, I don't do it.

// I merely suggested that you view/do something else if you dont like 'Only Connect'. //

No, you didn't, you inferred that by watching it, I 'cave in to what my wife wants', and once again, that is not the case, and I have said so.

// But no way would I sit through something that I didnt want to. //

Nor would I nailit - nor would I.

jim - // I appreciate that in some ways Science is more specialised than Arts etc, but that shouldn't be too discouraging. //

I don't know how many times I am going to have to say this to you, but my point is not that the questions and answers are specialised, it's that I don't ... understand ... either of them.

gness - // It may defeat the point of the show for you, Andy but for many of us admiring the knowledge of others and sometimes being able to answer is just so good! //

I do get that gness - it's just not enough for me to really enjoy the show as much as its fans do.

That said, I don't find it all difficult or unpleasant to watch - I wouldn't watch it if i did, i just occasionally watch it with my lovely wife because it follows UC and she likes both of them.

I am intrigued by lateral thinking, but intrigued doesn't stretch as far as entertained, and that's my point.
