Anyone know anything about bikes?
I have a rather rusty one in the back garden, was quite expensive when I bought it on a whim but has since sat in the garden for several years!! What’s the best way to clean it?

I didn't actually mean detach the spokes from the wheels Talbot, a modicom of common sense is required obviously, but yes strip it down as much as possible and reassemble, just plain common sense really.

This isn't a joke but take it to a local bike shop for refurbishment. It may need more than just a bit of polish.

Definitely needs more than a polish Tilly was hoping to do it myself but think it maybe beyond me
Good luck with finding someone to do it, Rockrose. There are several places around here where you can get a bike sorted out. Maybe it's the same in your area.

Halfords would check it over for you.
If all else fails, RR.....prop it well in the garden....large basket on the front with trailing plants....ivy threading through the spokes and if you can motorise the pedals two little gnomes going round and round...
I am on the lookout for a rusty bike for my garden.....x
Have a go yourself - I'd try WD40 first. If that doesn't work, try these

Well just phoned the local bike shop and a basic overhaul is £85! Mr Rockrose suggests I find out how much a new one is and we should apparently just rehome this at the local tip.
i suspect that Rockroses's bike already has ivy threading through the spokes ...
I'd first spray the whole thing with WD40 then wipe clean and see what you've got, tackle it a bit at a time, if you are up to removing the wheels then I'd do that. If you can hang it up, that would help.
If it was mine, I'd pump the tyres up, spray everything with WD40, leave it a day, remove every removable part, clean it, WD 40 with it again and reassemble it. If the chain is really solid, take it off and soak it in a tub of oil til it frees off. It should be fine, I've resurrected some Moses rode, as we leave em for yonks in the garden :) x
There's a big WD40 fan club here isn't there? It's my answer to nearly everything :) x

How longs is yonks Kval? This has been in the garden for several years at least 4 if not more!
Question Author
Not I vy but it had sticky willies and part of a tree!
Maybe 2-3 years? Hard to know it was pretty seized, give it a go you've got nothing to lose except a bit of time and elbow grease :) x
remove every removable part

Have you ever had bike, Kval?
No Talbot that's why I'm making suggestions on this thread, because I have no idea what i'm talking about :/
What's so weird about suggesting that she removes every removable part ( handlebars, seats, chain etc), that's certainly what I'd do. What would you do?
Main thing will be a new chain. Most other components ‘should’ be persuaded to work with a spray of wd40 (other water repelant lubricating sprays are available).
Question Author
The pedals are rusted through and the brakes things will need replacing at least not just the pads.
Currently looking at new bikes
If the bike is really, really rusty forget the WD40. What you need is a product called "Evapo-Rust". An excellent product...Google it, and I think you'll be convinced.
Quite. Some posts deserve to be questioned, especially the 'take it to Halfords' one.
I'm sure that a company of that size must have SOME staff able to walk and give a monkeys at the same time, I just haven't met them yet.
