Well all the talk of Saffron in the paella post has led me to ask just how much is saffron.

I do recall my nephew talking about it when he was here and said that his mother-in-law had bought him a paella dish and also saffron. He said "you know Aunty Jenny - saffron is just as expensive as gold."

Please somebody put me out of my misery. Just how much is it. Thanks

oh by the way - can you actually taste it
Not really depends on if you are a competent cook or not
Yes...it tastes nice.
Just half a gram of saffron costs £2.50 in Tesco:

(For comparison, a postage stamp weighs about 1 gram)

Jamie Oliver uses '2 large pinches' of saffron in this paella recipe but that's for 6 people. (So a little goes a long way):

PS: If you're going to add saffron to any dish, remember to soak it in hot (not boiling) water for a few minutes first.
In the middle ages, it was reckoned that a pound of saffron would cost the same as a good horse.
Not a lot of people know that.

But if you ever visit Morocco, they have saffron for sale there, at good prices. Prices are set, however, so no haggling.
I've had saffron recently in a very different form, colchicine....like saffron, from crocus bits like anthers and a fair kick that has, only a max of 12 pills allowed in any burst, 3 a day on average.....
and a little does go a long way....might even put it in a chicken pot au feu to annoy eccles.
Safron has a lovely earthy flavour. I infuse it in hot water, then chill the saffron "tea" and make shortcrust pastry with it for mushroom tarts.
Saffron cake is a local delicacy for afternoon tea down here..

And very nice it is too !
