Sista referred to a certain book yesterday that she bought for 50p in a charity shop and whilst the book makes pretty much riveting reading the book itself is in tatters.

I googled said book to perhaps buy a better one

New book costs £499.99

Used book costs £49.99

Would sista have an original and would it be worth anything. Thanks for any replies.

would need to know what the book is to answer....author, title, publisher and hardback or paperback.
Who knows if the book is a first edition? What is the title and author?

What publishing information is on the fly leaf?
Exciting, could be a find!

... But sometimes booksellers will list books at high prices when they are out of stock, so as to remain visible on search results pages, without having to say they're out of stock.

thanks all for your replies - I wouldn't be comfortable in mentioning the book as it is about an old neighbour of mine. Ta again.
???
How would we have known that.
For a book to be valuable - even a very rare one - it usually needs to be in excellent condition, preferably perfect.

So your sister's copy may be worth something, but you can knock a couple of noughts off if it is not pristine.
JJ, I wish you luck on your quest but if the book has been published then it is no secret.

You mention the copy is in 'tatters' that will have a huge effect on any value too.
Well, I feel cheated!
If the book has been published then you have no reason to protect your old neighbour, who may never know you mentioned it on AB in any case.

You can't ask such a question when you are not prepared to give the most basic details.
Exactly Umm! Tell us the name of the book, omit the personal details of being your neighbour - that would be the sensible way round!

I love a good book valuation.

If it is worth anything, Blackwells may be the place to pop into.
What dates do you have into it JJ?

£500 for a book? What is it, the Lindisfarne Gospels?
There's plenty around that mark on here, Jackdaw: https://www.blackwell.co.uk/rarebooks/
How any people are now googling books about people/person in Belfast?
contact bonhams or dominic winter and ask if it is worth putting into an auction.....
