I once saw a documentary called "shooting the Nile" about some guys canoeing the full length of the Nile, fascinating.

You might want to watch some of the Ed Stafford stuff he's got at least half a dozen loose screws. He walked the Amazon and spent 60 days alone on an island after being dropped off naked and with nothing apart from an emergency radio.

I haven't seen the programme. I have seen the trailers for it though and it looks VERY interesting. A brave and intrepid man, but as you say, maybe a tad potty too. !

No different to those wanting to climb Everest, those daring to fly the first aircraft, go into space etc.

Without such people most of the World would still be undiscovered.

I’d say it’s somewhat different. He’s not out to discover anything – he knows exactly where he’s going and what he’s likely to find en route. I still say he’s potty! Why walk? I’d at least ride a camel!

Not really. The first man to climb Everest was a pioneer. Just like the people who first trekked west across America never knowing what lay ahead of them, he had to find a safe route. No one did it for him. This chap’s got a computer with a map detailing his precise route and handily circumventing hazardous terrain such the swamplands in Sudan. He’s not a pioneer – he’s doing it as a personal challenge – just as people who climb Everest today do it as a personal challenge.
