Who would you say is our ultimate 'national treasure'?

The only rule is that they must be alive and cannot be a member of One Direction.

Also - let's leave The Queen out, because she's an NT by default.

I'm sure I've left loads of obvious nominees out, but here's some to get the juices flowing.

Dame Helen Mirren
Dame Judi Dench
Dame Maggie Smith
Victoria Wood
Julie Walters
Sir David Attenborough
Gareth Malone
Sir Trevor McDonald
Dawn French
Jennifer Saunders
David Dimbleby
Dame Vivienne Westwood
Sir Norman Foster
John Cleese
Sir Tom Jones
Sir Paul McCartney
Sir Cliff Richard
Sir Elton John
Joanna Lumley
Claire Balding
Richard Curtis
Mary Berry
Lord Attenborough
Baroness Trumpington
Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson

There are a lot of Sirs, Dames and Lords and Ladies in the list, which, may I say already recognised as such, although one or two I would dispute the title of NT.
However, my choice would be:
David Suchet
Shirley Bassey
Cilla Black (if you are having Tom (knickerfeeler) Jones
Michael Palin
and Paul Hollywood because I fancy him, because George Clooney doesn't qualify.

There's a few that I might disagree with in your list but I'm particularly pleased to see Sir Norman Foster in there.

I'll suggest:
John Sessions
Terence Conran
Michael Mansfield, QC
Brian Blessed
Michael Vaughan
Henry Blofield
Jack Charlton
Michael Parkinson
Stephen Fry
Sir Rannulph Feines
Johnson Beharry
Sir Ian Botham
Billy Connolly
Prof Brian Cox
Armando Ianucci
Gareth Edwards

to name but a few....
In my opinion Margaret and Barry mizen
Definitely Joanna Lumley, really admire her. Also Michael Palin.

wrong nation, jordyboy. Though I suppose you could swap him for Sean Connery.
DTCrosswordfan ;) for all his clever odes - that reminds me, where are they all DT? Are you saving them up for a massive Christmas ditty as in previous years?
Sir David Attenborough
Stephen Fry
Hugh Laurie
Richard Curtis
Jeff Chandler is no longer with us Jordy, and he is not of this green and pleasant land. I couldn't have George Clooney so I chose Mr Bakeoff himself. You could have Richard Attenborough, he is still with us......just.
No one. I neither look up to, or down on anyone. We are all different.
I liked Paul Hollywood in Great British Bake Off but he is a bit up himself now in his Pies & puds show.

Jordy wrong thread!!!! Adolph will not make NT in a million years.

Puss I think so too, and he now has "A Reputation". But he twinkles with it.
Nobody's mention "Sir" David Beckham?
Helena Kennedy might get the votes of the legal profession.
....or Joe Hart (Good luck in Brazil, you're going to need it) :-)

How could I have forgotten Brian Blessed???

A man who has never needed a microphone.
