I have Richard Willey born 1865 in Frampton , Lincolnshire, youngest son of John and Elizabeth (Betsey) Willey and on the 1871 census he is 6. His older siblings all at one time or another ended up at Greetland or Elland, I have tracked them all down, (Hid oldest sister is my great great grandmother), my cousin and I are going looking for her grave ii Tod on wednesday.
Now, Richard is not with his family on the 1881, he's be 16, there is no death in the GRO Deaths, no apparent marriage, I've spent hours looking for some record of him on ancestry, IGI, familysearch.org, etc. He's seemingly vanished, however, wierdly, when you look at him on the 1871 on the original image , in the right hand suggested records box it brings up, every time, a 1911 census entry for Harold James Brockman. when you click on the 1911 link for Henry James Brockman it takes you to the 1911 transcript for him, a 7 year old boy in london, and the right hand list of hints on ancestry has richard willey on the 1871 as a hint at the bottom of all the hints for henry james brockman! Bizarre as i cannot see why it is linking them,

I've found some merchant navy discharge papers for a Richard Willey born 1864 (as yours was). It says he was born at Sutton on Sea, Lincolnshire, I can only find one Richard Wiley born that year in Lincolnshire.

hi craft, thanks, I looked at those and I also found the Willey family at Sutton on sea last night, the father was reuben i think, i'll recap but i'm pretty sure it didn;t match on the details, there is no death registered is there? I read in the lostcousins newsletter a couple of months ago that the lincolnshire parish records had gone online but i've lost the link and can't find the site.
I can't find a registered death...........
I haven't found Richard either, but some of my people who disappeared without trace emigrated. One or two led colourful lives down-under such that they got a mention in the newspapers. I have looked for Richard on Trove and PapersPast but haven't found him. There were, however, other people with that surname. May be worth looking for disappearing uncles / cousins too because Richard would have been rather young to make his way alone.

As for Ancestry hints as you describe, I have put it down to other researchers having established those connections in their trees. I have noticed this with marriages and dates of death. OK, some of the names aren't particularly common, but they're not unique either. Can't help feeling this doesn't guarantee such hints are accurate ...

Question Author
thanks craft it arrived fine, I've found alot of the Willey clan in Sutton le marsh (sutton on sea) on the census and in parish records but i cannot find a richard born 1864 amongst them. Sutton on sea was in the same Deanery as Farlesthorpe where my Willey line go back to and there is a possible joining of the lines back before 1745 but i've not looked at it properly yet.

I need to look closer at the life of this Richard that was in the navy I think, cheers again craft
Lincolnshire parish records can be located at http://www.lincstothepast.com/
some haven’t been digitised yet and are available as microfiche or original registers at Lincolnshire Archives.
