It was 'Out Of This World' and used to be on during school summer holidays which is probably why I remember it so fondly.  Doug McClure played the town's mayor.

Wow I can't believe I have found this site - I've been trying to think of the name of this programme for ages. The song is taken from the 60's. I've got it on CD and wandered why I knew it. Then I remembered the programme. You have made my day thanks !!
