Or there appears to be by the number we hear about. Is there a connection between being gay and being artistic?

Carefull, you are walking on thin ice here.
I don't know, but you could say the same for hairdressing and cabin crew.

perhaps, or maybe it's a safe place to be, working in the theatre, arts, as opposed to say politics, where your sexuality may come in question, why it should is another matter entirely...
its certainly a more open minded industry
don't get many miners that way inclined, toooo risky dropping the soap in the shower.
They reckon there are a lot of sportsmen as well but afraid to "come out".
Is there a large proportion?

Really?

I'll bet you can name a handful of gay people..........and hundreds of hetero people in the Arts and Entertainment industry.
Who's "they", vakayu?
perhaps he means in the public eye, like Graham Norton, Alan Carr...
I'm not sure homosexuality is 'over represented' in Arts and Entertainment

I suspect perceptions are influenced by a few high profile TV performers

e.g. there are 4 main 'chat shows' on UK TV; Ross, Norton, Carr and Piers Morgan so that's 50% in that category but that is atypical of other categories

Perhaps the key to this is that unlike other professions, gays in Arts and Entertainment have more opportunity to be overt (or 'flaunt it' as some ABers might say)
i work in the arts and ent industry and have been at a conference today. I would agree that there were many gay people in the industry, both in performing arts as well as painting, design and making. ts a creative world and everyone is accepted. but. i have nothing to compare it with and no idea if the proportions are higher than any other sector.

I assume there are some industries which are so unwelcoming and not at all diverse, that gay people steer well clear.
No. There are many artistic straight people and many untalented gay people.

In both the straight and gay community there are many who are deluded and think they are talented and artistic.

Some performers you think are gay, aren't. Some you think aren't, are.

There are lots of gays in the civil service, police force, in manual labour.
There is no greater percentage of gay people in the arts than in any other profession. There is,however,a greater openness and acceptance of people as individuals and people are not classified by sexuality or anything else.
Slightly off the subject but can anybody think of a professional footballer now or in the past who is / was openly gay (With the exception of Justin Fashanu of course)
Some gay people are very flamboyant (as are some straight people), so they gravitate to dance and theatre, and the performing arts.

when we had pits believe me there were lots but in the closite for obvious reasons
Dave you seem to have an unhealthy interest in how others live their lives, not to mentio you lack of tolerance for the lifestyle choice of others.

Live and let live is agood mantra and tends to lead to a greater level of well being all round.
EcclesCake
sorry but your wrong there "a lifestyle of their choice" ?? 99.9% of gay people have no choice in the matter
