Scuse me for being thick but I`m going to ask anyway!!
I have a galaxy tab which doesn’t have a phone chip facility. I purchased it not realising this, and wondered if there is a way the sat nav will work without connection to the net?? As I say, sorry for being thick!!

The sat nav in my car has no web access. So my pure guess would be that it ought not be vital for your tablet. It needs to contact satellites not websites so much.
Don't call yourself that Its, sorry for being thick!!
If it comes with GPS, the tablet acts as a milti-channel receiver to pick up several GPS satellites, and from the signals it works out your position. No phones involved.
Oops - milti = multi.

I keep getting "waiting for location" and "your current location is unavailable" I get this even if I ouside in the car all the time. Thats why I thought I needed a network connection!! Thanks everyone.
As others have said, you don't need Internet for SatNav. However, if you don't have an Internet connection, you do need the relevant maps to be stored locally on your device. https://support.google.com/gmm/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2650218
