Did anyone watch this and if so what did you think of it? I just heard on Radio 5 live it being heralded as a great success.

yes I watched it - I don't usually like Steven Poliakov things but I enjoyed it very much. From the beginning you know that something bad happens to the band leader and then the action shifts to 18 months earlier. Its a world of wealthy (mostly) people who you feel are amusing themselves temporarily with the new (black) jazz musicians and it has an air of menace. One of the musicians has already been deported and the rest are barely tolerated and only because they bring in money , and royalty, to the hotel. Give it a whirl - hope you enjoy it.
I thought it was very good; direction, photography, and acting excellent, the singers may have been chosen more for their acting abilities than their voices, but what strange music! referred to throughout as "jazz" but nothing that I could identify as the jazz of 1933. Perhaps it was written specially for the play, does anyone know? I shall watch again tonight and suspect the fat millionaire is going to get 'sorted'.
not sure i like this, it all seems rather slow, as to the music, doesn't seem the type of jazz played around the time. The better of the singers is Munwi Masuko, but she barely got a look in, will watch but am wondering quite what the point of it is..
The trailer looked good, I did read somewhere that it was very slow, and when I saw it was running over five weeks, that put me off. Most dramas can be done in two episodes max, they are often dragged out far too much.
smurfchops; // Most dramas can be done in two episodes max,// That really depends, recent Danish dramas like The Killing, and Borgen show that is not necessarily the case. I'm going to hang in, but I still have a problem with the music (see above).
I have enjoyed it but do not understand it, I have watched 1 & 2 are there more then? If so, when?
netibiza: There's 5 episodes, the next one is on Monday (11th).
I've got these taped and very much looking forward to watching them.
