He's a man who assumes the identity of a long-missing heir to a fortune in order to inherit it.  There's a film version due out this year starring Ben Affleck, I believe.

Just goes to show, for some reason, i always thought it was Simon McCorkindale who was Brat Farrar, Don't know why exactly.
terrific book, by Josephine Tey, probably still in print
sorry, for Mark Greenstreet see here - related to Sydney Greenstreet and lost out to Timothy Dalton to play 007, it seems.

I haven't heard anything about a new film version. The story was the - loose - basis for a B horror type film called Paranoiac starring Oliver Reed in the 60s.

But I would agree that it was an excellent TV drama and would join with jno in recommending Josephine Tey's books which have aged remarkably well.

Oh and to answer your 'what was it about question: "It was eight years since Patrick had vanished leaving his pitiful note, 'I'm sorry but I can't bear it any longer. Don't be angry with me, Patrick.' Now it seemed, he had returned - just in time to claim the family inheritance. But if Patrick really had committed suicide, who was this mysterious young man claiming to be him and calling himself Brat Farrar?" That's the synopsis blurb from the book jacket
