Petrol Service Stations

I must of missed the news.

About 6 or 7 years ago there were quite a large number of petrol station opening approximate to each other. Why is it so many petrol stations have closed down?

Supermarket price wars. If Tescos are giving me 5p per litre off when I do my shopping, I might as well fill up while I'm there. I'd be silly not to really.

also because of consolidation and mergers in the industry eg Exxon Mobil (Esso), BP - Amoco.  If a merger firm has two stations next to each other, one will be closed to save money.
