Just "celebrated" my 50th b day with family. Rented a lovely house, had a great meal and much fun. Problem was that everyone upped sticks as soon as X factor started and stared like zombies at the TV! Killed the party dead.

Should I have expected more? I was right peed off at the time..........what happened to conversation? Or a card game?

Perhaps I'm just out of touch. I still feel a little bit let down, truth be told.

I would be really peeved - I hate it when the television rules the roost. I'd have made a rule myself, no t.v. on my birthday!
can they not record it? party poopers.

happy birthday.
When we were growing up the TV was always switched off when we got visitors. Nowadays that doesn't seem to happen.
rented a house to celebrate your birthday?

I agree with boxtops there would be a no tv rule
You're right to be peed off. I'd have put my parts on the minute the TV was switched on to be honest. But its done now and best forgotten, try to remember the best parts of the day.

Happy Birthday ☺.

I wish I had done that boxtops! Too late now, and I consider my birthday ruined!

Oh, well, at least I'll always remember my 50th!
A card game????

Crikey, if that's the alternative option, i'd rather watch telly too.

Seriously though, happy birthday :-)
It doesn't have to be ruined. It's over soon...
Don't consider it ruined - just make a note for next time - and remember that your family seem to have a strange idea about what people want to do on their birthdays! Happy birthday from us, anyway!!

Yes, rented a house by the sea...........was supposed to be special! ho hum

Glad to see it's not just me being an old fogie......I think they were rude to do that.

I really do feel let down.

And thanks for the b/day wishes folks!

All is not lost............I am having a beer and playing on the PC! bugger 'em lol
Happy Birthday (for yesterday?). I find that really rude, not like people couldn't record it and watch later! If you'd wanted to watch it fair enough but otherwise it's pretty disrespectful of your birthday, especially a special one, and the effort you'd gone to.
Happy belated birthday - even if you meant last night it would have finished by 10, could you not start the party up again? What did they do after, go to bed?
TBH you should be complaining to your family - let them know how they feel.

Say its my birthday I don't want TV I want 10 flavours of icecream!!

Perhaps if you did not say anything they thought you would like a quiet time!
Perhaps they thought you liked X factor - didn't they discuss it first? i think that's so rude.
I'm with you too, voulez-vous.

Any kind of game or conversation, or singing or dancing, but no TV .
Question Author
They know I hate x factor. They went to bed afterwards boring farts that they are. And they DO know how I feel about it, because I told them this morning.............doubt I'm flavour of the month!
i feel like pouring a wine and celebrating with you
I'd have switched it off and presented my alternative entertainment - your house, your rules. Happy birthday though.
Did you pay for the renting etc.? If so, even ruder....
