i recently had to call my daughter in an emergency at her place of work and the only way to contact a member of staff is through an ememrgency number, my daughter has now phoned me and told me that the call was being recorded, are they able to do that, or is it against the law, privacy laws and all that ? thanks

she didint know until afterwards it was being recorded
How did she find out it was recorded? office gossip? or has your discussion been brought up?
As I said earlier, it's a very grey area when it comes to recording private phone calls.

but that aside, the company has to take reasonable steps to ensure that both parties are aware of the fact they are being recorded, however, what is classed as "reasonable steps" is not clearly defined anywhere, OFCOM themselves do not announce on their own phone lines that calls may be recorded but they do state on their website that calls to their numbers may be recorded.

If your daughters company has it anywhere in their staff handbook, or on a notice board, or similar that calls to the emergency lines may be recorded they have probably covered themselves in as much as the information is clearly available and it could reasonably be assumed that anyone she gave the number to then it would be down to her to inform them that the calls may be recorded.

Like I said, a very grey area and one that as far as I'm aware has never been taken to court so there is no precedent in the matter.
If I were ringing an emergency number and the operator spent a minute explaining that my call was being recorded, I wouldn't be happy.
Press one if your emergency is about a family member, press two if it's about a pet, press 3 if it is about a vehicle break down...... thank you, please hold and somebody will be with you shortly, your emergency is important to us.
