Some months ago I had my car repaired and serviced and paid with a cheque as normal, I wrote the invoice number and car reg. on the back of the cheque so they would know which a/c it was for. I have just received a red letter saying they have no record of the payment. I have my bank statement with the cheque number and amount for the date in question, but the garage says I could have paid someone else the same amount and not them.
Can I get my cheque back from the bank to prove payment I realize their maybe a charge but I need to clear this up as it is getting about that I am a non payer of bills which I want to quash.
TIA

You certainly used to be able to do that - check with your bank in the morning!

Also in the Payee box is their business name as further proof
Your bank should be able to supply you with a copy off microfilm if you supply them with the cheque number and the date it was debited to your account. Obviously they will make a charge for this service.
I am surprised no receipt was given at the time, or did you send it by post?
You may find they still won't accept the copy of the back of the cheque as proof the payment was for your car's service.
Good luck though- I hope it gets sorted out
Your bank won't necessarily charge - mine didn't a little while back.

You get a photocopy of both sides of the cheque
They should also be able to trace the sort code and account of the account it was paid into.
Indeed, we had a similar problem a while back when a supplier of a training course denied having been paid for a course they supplied. We were able (eventually) to confirm which account the cheque had been paid into and they conceded they had received it after all. The bank didn't charge us either but it was a business account and it might be different. It also took several weeks for them to actually source the information as it had been archived!

Thanks to all for ideas will get to bank asap with suggestions
let you know how I get on
This will only work if the company actually paid the cheque in though - has the amount definitely been removed from your bank account?
If they haven't paid the cheque in then clearly he hasn't paid for it and should pay again.
R=The cheque has been cashed. kaw69 said "I have my bank statement with the cheque number and amount for the date in question"
Sorry I obviously didn't read it properly! Should be no problem getting a copy for proof then.
