Can I find out what sentence a court has handed out?

Hiya

Do courts allow anyone to find out what sentence theyve given to people that day?

Just asking as on Monday someone who threatened me with a baseball bat after kicking in the front door of the shared house Im in, is in court...and it would be nice to know what happens to him

Phone the police station and ask for the officer in the case of..........and ask them.Or the freedom of information act,but that takes a while.

yes as long as you know the persons name you can ring the courts afterwards and they have to tell you the outcome. if this person is in court because of the incident you have described then the cps can also imform you of outcome.

Why not go to the Court and sit in the Public Gallery?

Yeah Ive got the PCs number so I'll probably give him a buzz..Ive got a witness statement ref and all that

I dont actually know this guys name though..Im not even sure what the charge is going to be - must be at least B&E, carrying an offensive weapon...could be more?!

Id love to go and see what he gets (but work beckons, and as Ive only got a 2 day week anyway as Im on my hollibobs, I really need to be in)

I thought that the victim support team would notify you.
They certainly did when my partner was the victim of a crime. We had a full letter explaining the verdict.

I was notified by post when the bloke who burgled my house was sentenced. He got four and a half years.

With a few very rare exceptions all adult court proceedings are public events and the results are in the public domain and can be obtained freely by the methods already mentioned. This has nothing to do with the fairly recent Freedom of Information Act.

Furthermore, as the victim you have the legal right to know the outcome of the case against your assailant and should be told as a matter of course by either the Witness Liaison office or the police.
