I've asked this in technology but I thought I'd try from a different angle so to speak ,

A friend of mine bought a laptop from PC World , there is a problem with it which PC World say is due to Microsoft software . They've told her she would have to contact Microsoft HQ ,. I would have thought she was entitled to a straight swap but don't know the legalities . Can someone who does help pls ?

I'm sure someone who knows for sure will be along soon but I think they are trying to fob her off by telling her to contact Microsoft HQ!!! They must have sold her the laptop with the dodgy software in the first place.

How long ago did she buy it?

My thoughts entirely ! Only had it a couple of weeks
I bought my Desktop PC from PC World about 2 years ago and paid 50 for installation by an independent installer appointed by PC World. This was to make sure that if there was a fault with the equipment, they could not put the blame on me i.e I messed things up during installation which would have affected the Guarantee.
My Hardware was fine, but Installation Engineer did not install my Printer properly and I had to re-install myself after he left.
I complained to PC World Head Office and they refunded 20 of installation Fee.
Tell your Friend to ring PC World Head Office and complain about the problem and do not be fobbed off by excuses as the Equipment was bought in good faith with all Software installed properly as should have been the case.
They should replace the Laptop and send it back to the manufacturer who installed the Software from Microsoft in the first place !!

Thanks Redman will do . If she'd asked me beforehand I'd have steered her well clear , They took advantage of her lack of knowledge to sell her Norton 360 as well .
I had Norton for first 12 months but un-installed it due to the cost of renewal. Instead I have downloaded the Freeware available for Computer safety i.e Avira, Malwarebytes etc.
She has bought new equipment and deserves 100% Customer satisfaction from PC World. Pursue the issue until you get a satisfactory conclusion.

Thanks again , I've told her I'll uninstall Norton & install all the freeware I use myself . We'll see how it goes with that .
This is pretty straightforward. PC world are the concern you have a contract with so they are responsible for goods not fit for purpose. If they quibble at all go straight to Trading Standards who are very good at this sort of thing.
If its a software problem installed by PC World then they should re-install the software only.

As for buying Nortons, that was her choice & PC Worlds marketting - no refunds there.
