I have a potential litigation relating to a property law issue which I need to get resolved and approached a solicitor to get some professional advice. I was told that his charges were 170 an hour (+ VAT) and that I should budget for a 3 hour meeting. I wasn't expecting free advice, but I frankly can't afford 600-odd at this stage. Are there law centres/legal centres where advice can be sought from experienced law professionals where the costs are much lower, and if so, what are they called?

Might help? They should at least know the facts and the relevant laws, which you could then take to your solicitor.

Thanks, that's certainly one avenue!
do you have legal cover with your home insurance policy? This would cover lawyers fees if you do.
Or Citizens Advice might give you quick free advice.
Do the 'Citizen Advice' not have lawyers. Our CAB used to have a lawyer who came in one night a week ---- I wouldn't say their advice would be free.but maybe a lot less than the one you have been quoted
do some digging online also. there are some pretty sage people on here who may also be able to point you in the right direction. good luck x

CAB was my first thought but these days it seems to involve a premium rate phone line - I'd prefer to do some online research on this as there's a lot to explain to whoever I can find to go through this with - thanks, all, for the suggestions.
I just found the local CAB, using the CAB website, and the phone number was just a local one with the same area code as me.
Look at some universities round you. they sometimes have a free law clinic which might help you
