I own a football forum and would like to know if comments on these by registered contributers would be liable to legal action if they were deemed to be slanderous or defammatory?

Is there a law which covers this please? Many thanks.

Slander is the spoken word, libel is the written.

You would be ultimately responsible for any defamatory remarks on your forum UNLESS you can prove you removed the statements as soon as was reasonably practicable.

This could be when you were alerted of the libel, because truth is no offence.

Unless the person who made the statement can be properly identified, in which case s/he would be liable.
