I have recently stayed at a hotel and left an expensive item in the hotel. i phoned the hotel on the day of checkout once i had realised and they confirmed they had it and said they would post it out by recorded delivery. They haven't returned it and haven't also returned my calls and emails. What rights do I have?

None? If you are stupid enough to leave an expensive item in a hotel then that is your fault.

Even if they had posted it (which surely they are under no obligation to do) then it could have gone missing in the post. Recorded delivery only records when an item is delivered, if it goes missing in transit then it is tough.
You could claim on your insurance (assuming you are insured) and let the insurance company take action against the hotel. If the item has been stolen then you should inform the police.
Don't email them write to them.

Write directly to the hotel manager setting out the facts, who you spoke to and when etc and ask him to reply within x about what they intend to do.

Ordinarily I think you don't have a leg to stand on, I could say I lost a 2000000 ring there and it could be a lie however, as they have admitted they did have it the onus is now on them.

If they sent anything by post it is up to them to chase with the post office (they have the contract with post not you) as untill you get it it is still the hotels responsibility.
If the hotel sent it via recorded del this now means your expensive item is worth the princely sum of 34 - which is all you would receive in the event of a claim form the PO.

I fail to see why it is the hotels responsibility to ensure the item is received by coffeequeen? She left it there not them - if they posted it they did it out of customer service and therefore, IMO, they have done their part and no longer have to be in contact with CQ
If you do get hold of them then you maybe able to get hold of the track and trace numer so you can track it on the Royal Mail delivery site.

Recorded delivery doesn't necessarily mean next day and can take quite a while to reach the destination, especially if there has been a previous failed delivery and it can then be a lengthy process to haveit delivered back.

What was the item and the estimated value? Was it a reasonable thing to have posted?
And recorded delivery is no good to send stuff - should have been registered/special delivery as you only get compo on that AND it is monitored fro delivery. Recorded stuff is sent in the ordinary post and is not tracked in any way.
there is no registered post. It was done away with and it became recorded a few years ago.
Duh!

look at my name, I ought to know..........

it used to be called registered, now called special delivery.
CQ...Hoping you have travel insurance. Most insurances will pay up to 200 for lost items, with proof. Your proof are your emails to & from the hotel and receipt for the original purchase of item. Fill in the claim form for the IC and get reimbursed.

If the item cost more than 200 then you should've read the IC terms before taking it with you. No point in claiming for a platinum diamond encrusted Rolex......that wont be paid out!

Ur emails to hotel are important so print them out before your PC crashes!
thank you postdog - yes i do know you are/were a postman

Still means there is no registered post anymore
Doesn't take away form the item now only being worth 34 for a claim with the PO
