Ignoring the idiot above....
I found with both my dogs that when old age started to creep around this problem started to happen. Might be worth a checkup at the vet but with ours there seemd nothing to do but live with it. I know its not pleasant but I found a bit of cleaning a small price to pay to see my dogs through their twilight.
I agree with burnhal my old GSD (sadly no longer with me), used to poo as he was standing up, he just couldn't control it any longer, don't draw attention to it, and I am sure you are not telling him off when he does it, he can't help it, however a little check up at the vets wouldn't be a bad idea.
Also, just a thought, do you feed him just once a day? if so try feeding him 2 smaller feeds, (morning and evening) it may just be that he can't cope with larger quantities any more.
Good luck.
Go back to treating him like a puppy, letting him out for a poo/wee as soon as he wakes up, after eating, or after playing (if he does still play - or if not, just after he has been around for a while getting a fuss). Stay out with him until you have seen him go. He may not associate it with being clean, but the more times he is able to go outside the less cleaning you will have to do. I would also put newspaper down so you can quickly roll it up and dispose of any mess. My friends old lab did this, and we perfected the art of getting a dustpan under his tail to catch it as he went!
My 10 year old Dobermann does this. Not all the time though - I just think he forgets where he is at times!!!! Old age does funny things. I also find he poos in his basket - he covers it up thinking I wont find it!! I have been told that this is because he is embarrased.
